Steve served in the RAF Police from 1966 until he transferred to the Royal Military Police; he also later served in the Metropolitan Police. He joined the RAF Police Association in 1995 and is a Life Member.

On the formation of the Essex & Suffolk Branch in 1996 Steve became its first Branch Secretary and a valued member of the Executive Council. He was appointed as Branch Development Officer assisting with the formation of several new Branches.

In early February 1998 the Council held an emergency meeting at RAF Wittering as no planning had been done for that year's National AGM & Reunion. Steve immediately volunteered to arrange the event with the Essex & Suffolk Branch hosting, the first time that a Branch had acted as host. Within 24 hours Steve had identified a suitable venue in Westcliffe-on-Sea and had negotiated a weekend package at highly attractive rates; the weekend was a huge success and set the trend for the future.

Steve assumed editorship of the Association newsletter in 1996 and the "Griff" was born; he was forced to relinquish editorship in 1998 due to work commitments. He also acted as Editor of the Member's Directory for a period.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Association, at both National & Branch level, he became the 11th Recipient of the Award in 2008.
